Pleasure Gardens
"And the daughter of Marlenus?" I
insisted.
"She is undoubtedly in the Pleasure Gardens of the boldest tarnsman on
Gor," laughed the warrior. "I hope he has as much luck with her as the
Home Stone. I have heard she has the temper of a tharlarion and a face to
match!"
Talena stiffened, her pride offended.
"I have heard," she said imperiously, "that the daughter of the Ubar is
the most beautiful woman on all Gor." TARNSMAN OF GOR-, (1) Pages

On Gor a woman normally travels
only with a suitable retinue of armed guards. Women, on this barbaric
world, are often regarded, unfortunately, as little more than love prizes,
the fruits of conquest and seizure. Too often they are seen less as
persons, human beings with rights, individuals worthy of concern and
regard than as potential pleasure slaves, silken, bangled prisoners,
possible adornments to the pleasure gardens of their captors. There is a
saying on Gor that the laws of a city extend no further than its walls.
OUTLAW OF GOR-, (2) Page 50
This was more than I had counted
on, and I had to resist an urge to comfort her, to tell her that I would
not hurt her, that she was safe, but, mindful of Linna and Andreas, and
the poor wretches in the Amusements, I restrained my compassion. Indeed,
as I thought of the cruel Tatrix, of what she had done, I wondered if, in
fact, I should not take her to Ar and dispose of her on the Street of
Brands. Surely she would be more harmless in the Pleasure Gardens of a
tarnsman than on the throne of Tharna. OUTLAW OF GOR-, (2) Pages

"A man may have many slave girls," she sniffed. "Surely in your Pleasure
Gardens -- wherever they may be -- many beautiful captives wear your
collar?" OUTLAW OF GOR-, (2) Page 202
Perhaps she would find herself confined within the walls of some warrior's
Pleasure Gardens, to be dressed in silk of his choosing, to have bells
locked on her ankles and to know no will other than his; perhaps she would
be purchased by the master of a Paga Tavern, or even of a lowly Kal-da
shop, to dance for, and to serve and please his customers. OUTLAW OF
GOR-, (2) Page 244
Perhaps she, my Free Companion, even now lay chained in one of the blue
and yellow slave wagons, or served Paga in a tavern or was the belled
adornment to some warrior's Pleasure Gardens. Perhaps even now she stood
upon the block in some auction in Ar's Street of Brands. PRIEST
KINGS OF GOR-, (3) Pages 307-308
"These are exotics," said Ho-Tu.
That expression is used for any unusual variety of slave. Exotics are
generally quite rare.
"In what way?" I asked myself had never cared much for exotics, any more
than I cared much for some of the species of dogs and goldfish which some
breeders of Earth regarded as such triumphs. Exotics are normally bred for
some deformity which is thought to be appealing. On the other hand,
sometimes the matter is much more subtle and sinister. For example it is
possible to breed a girl whose saliva will be poisonous; such a woman,
placed in the Pleasure Gardens of an enemy, can be more dangerous than the
knife of an Assassin. ASSASSIN OF GOR-, (5) Page 115
To the amusement of the crowd it
took the whip slave, and two others, to strip the biting, scratching
forest beauties. The pair was eventually sold to a collector for ten gold
pieces; I trust the security of his Pleasure Gardens is superb, else he
might waken to a knife at his throat and the demand for a tarn, and,
perhaps eventually, in the rags of a slave, a seat on the bench of a cargo
galley. ASSASSIN OF GOR-, (5) Page 294
Why had this been done to me? Was
this the reward for my services? And what of Elizabeth? Was it that
Marlenus had looked upon her and so pleasing did he find her that he had
decreed that she be reserved for the very Pleasure Gardens of the Ubar of
Ar himself, to serve him as a silken wench, one of perhaps hundreds
waiting perhaps a year for his casual notice or his touch? Men such as
Marlenus are wont to take what pleases them, and to hold it, should they
wish, at the point of a blade. Had it been that his eye had glanced upon
her and he had, by the prerogative of the Ubar, commanded her to his slave
ring. But was this honor? My hatred for the Ubar of Ar, whom I had helped
restore to his throne, welled up within me, volcanic, molten and black. My
hand was clutched on the hilt of my sword. ASSASSIN OF GOR-, (5)

"You have an admirer," Targo told
her, "a Captain of Tyros, who glimpsed you in Lydius last fall. He has
contracted to buy you privately in Ar, to be taken to his pleasure gardens
on Tyros. He will pay one hundred pieces of gold." CAPTIVE OF GOR-,

Both of the women lay at his feet.
Both would march nude, chained to the stirrup of his tharlarion, in his
triumph in Ar. Both would later, in silks and bells, barefoot, in bangles
and slave rouge, serve him in his pleasure gardens. Dancing for him,
pouring him wine, serving his pleasure, perhaps together, both would much
please him. Hura and Mira were lovely souvenirs of the northern forests,
fitting mementos for the great Ubar; they were tokens of his victories,
reminders of his success' their captive bodies would be found by him
doubtless, when he looked upon them, rich in meaning as well as in
pleasure. I could imagine him, drinking, pointing to one, telling his
companions the story of the northern forests. "Now dance, Beauties!" he
would cry, and they would, slaves, leap to their feet to please his
companions. I wondered if, in the telling of that story, there would be
mention of one called Bosk of Port Kar. HUNTERS OF GOR-, (8) Page

Beyond this, there exists on Gor a
variety of brands for women, though the Kajira brand, which Eta wore, is
by far the most common. Some merchants invent brands, as the dina was
invented, in order to freshen the nature of their merchandise and
stimulate sales. Collectors, for example, those who are rich, sometimes
collect exotic brands, much as collectors on Earth might collect stamps or
coins, populating their pleasure gardens not only with girls who are
beautiful but diversely marked. A girl, of course, wants to be bought by a
strong master who wants her for herself, muchly desiring and lusting for
her, not for her brand. When a girl is bought, of course, it is commonly
because the man wants her, she, the female, and is willing to put down his
hard-earned money for her and her alone, for she is alone; all she brings
from the block is herself; she is a slave; she cannot bring wealth, power,
or family connections; she comes naked and sold; it is she alone he buys.
There are, of course, men who buy for brands. To meet this market various
brands are developed and utilized. The "slave flower" brand was a natural
development. Unfortunately for these entrepreneurs, their greed and lack
of control over the metal shops resulted in the widespread proliferation
of the dina brand. As it became more popular, it was becoming,
simultaneously, of course, a fairly common brand. Girls branded as I was
were already spoken of on Gor, rather disparagingly, as "dinas."
Collectors now seldom sought for dinas. This development, though perhaps a
disappointment to certain merchants and slavers, was not unwelcome to the
girls who bore the brand, though few cared for their feelings. SLAVE
GIRL OF GOR-, (11) Pages 62-63
The most valuable general category
of slaves, however, much to the chagrin of some male silk slaves, is that
of the particularly desirable female. These are usually extraordinarily
beautiful Gorean girls, once of high caste. Sometimes they are dancers.
Commonly they are highly trained. Sometimes they are even passion slaves,
girls literally bred for the pleasure of men. The prizes purchased by
Ubars and rich men for their pleasure gardens usually belong to the types
of girls included in this general category. FIGHTING SLAVE OF GOR-,

I did not understand, truly, the
remark of Miles of Argentum. I was not interested in men, of course, I
reassured myself, as a woman of Earth, but, on the other hand, I did not
think that I was unusually greedy either. Such things, at any rate, were
generally not uppermost in my mind. There was a difference sometimes, I
supposed, between the true and reputed characters of public figures. How
odd, sometimes, are fame and rumors. That I might conceivably be presented
with male silk slaves took me aback for a moment but then I realized that,
as a female ruler, it was not out of the question that I might be
presented with such gifts. Typical gifts for a male ruler, I knew, might
include beautiful female slaves, additional riches for his pleasure
gardens. KAJIRA OF GOR-, (19) Page 90
Maximus Hegesius Quintilius was
later found assassinated in his own pleasure gardens, slain there by the
bite of a chemically prepared poison girl, one killed by Taurentians
before she could be questioned. MERCENARIES OF GOR-, (21) Page 246
There is no doubt that slaves
without private masters, or slaves in multiple-slave chains, arrangements,
households, institutions, and such, may experience terrible loneliness.
There is doubtless great loneliness, for example, in a rich man's pleasure
gardens. Indeed, the presence of a lovely slave there might not even be
known to the master, but only to her immediate keepers, and the master's
agents, who may have purchased her, or accountants, who keep records of
the master's properties and assets. Perhaps she must beg piteously to be
called to the attention of the master. Some women in such a place, even
those whose existence is known, or remembered, at least vaguely, might
wait for months for a summons to the couch of the master, he perhaps
selecting a ribbon with her name on it, from a rack of slave ribbons, and
tossing it to an attendant, that she be brought in chains to this quarters
that night, the ribbon on her collar. Too, it can doubtless be lonely in
the house of a slaver, especially when the guards do not choose to amuse
themselves with you, or have you perform for them, or, say, when you find
yourself alone at night, perhaps a work slave, in the basement of a
cylinder, chained in a cement kennel. MERCENARIES OF GOR-, (21) Page

"But then, on the other hand," I
said, "aside from such possibilities, and still considering the question
of a private master, you might find yourself under the tutelage of a
whip-master in a rich man's pleasure gardens."
"But I would be only one of many women there?" she said.
"Undoubtedly," I said. "Perhaps one of fifty, or a hundred."
"I think I would prefer to be the single slave of a single master," she
said. VAGABONDS OF GOR-, (24) Pages 234-235
The depot, incidentally, had been
muchly crowded, thought not with fee carts. Most of the wagons, coaches,
fee carts, and such were gone. No longer were the schedules within and
outside of the city, being kept. Tharlarion, and such transportation, were
now said to be worth their weight in gold. I had heard that certain rich
men had exchanged as many as fifteen high slaves, choice "flowers" from
their pleasure gardens, trained even to Curulean quality, for a single
tharlarion and wagon. MAGICIANS OF GOR-, (25) Page 68
"To be sure," he said, "perhaps
she will be kept for the pleasure gardens of Lurius of Jad, or the kennels
if his house slaves, if she was not beautiful enough for his pleasure
gardens."
"Watch a moment," I said.
Talena, as I knew, was an exquisitely beautiful female, with that olive
skin, and dark eyes and hair. I did not doubt but what she was worthy of a
ubar's pleasure gardens, and even if, all things considered, she was not
quite of that quality, she would still, undoubtedly, find herself there.
Allowances are often made for special women, former enemies, and such, and
I had little doubt that an allowance of one sort or another would be made
for a ubar's daughter, or one taken to be such. It must be remembered,
too, that the contents of a pleasure garden are not necessarily always
viewed in only one light. For example, such a garden may contain women who
are, in a sense, primarily trophies. Surely Talena might count, say, from
the standpoint of a Lurius of Jad, as such a trophy. Indeed, some men,
collectors, use their gardens mainly for housing their collections, say,
of different types of women, selected perhaps primarily with an eye to
illustrating, and exhibiting, various forms of female beauty, or, indeed,
even for their unique or rare brands. MAGICIANS OF GOR-, (25) Pages

The lot of a state slave can be
one of great deprivation. Indeed, I fear it often is. Certainly it is
commonly regarded as an extremely unenviable slavery by most slaves. To be
sure, they are occasionally made available to male slaves, guards and
such. Some state slaves, of course, usually girls of unusual beauty, are
used at state banquets, to serve and entertain. But even there the state
not unoften utilizes trained feast slaves, rented from various
establishments or, upon certain occasions, even the girls from a Ubar's
own pleasure gardens. MAGICIANS OF GOR-, (25) Page 376
