Venaticus Street
Then, from some two hundred yards away, I heard the shrill, excited squeal
of one of the animals. I looked wildly south, down the Boulevard of Teiban.
The sleen, and those with them, had come west on Venaticus. As Clive
borders the Teiban Market on the north, so Venaticus borders it on the
south. To my horror, I saw the sleen, and the crowd, turning right, north
on Teiban. They were proceeding toward me. I did not understand this. Why
had they not come down Clive? Then, suddenly, sick, I remembered that I
had, two days ago, taken Venaticus west to Teiban. It must be that trail,
two days old, that they were following. I swiftly fled west, continuing on
Clive. In a few minutes I had come to Clive and Hermadius. It was on
Hermadius, less than an Ahn ago, that I had first seen the sleen. I
continued west on Clive, and turned left, south, on Emerald. This street,
like Hermadius, leads to the Plaza of Tarns. But I was not seeking the
Plaza of Tarns and the agency. I turned right, off Emerald, when I came to
Tarn-Gate Street. This is the street which leads directly between Ar's
west gate, called the Tarn Gate, and the Plaza of Tarns. KAJIRA OF GOR-,

If the sleen were unleashed they
would doubtless be upon me in a matter of Ihn. I ran wildly down the
street. I looked about. The sleen had not been unleashed, at least as yet.
Had they been I would have knelt down and covered my face with my hands. I
would not have wanted to see them leaping towards me, eyes blazing, fangs
bared, jaws sopped with salivation, to seize me. I stumbled on, down the
street, before the animals, before the hunters, before the eager crowd. I
saw one or two men on the street back against the buildings. They did not
wish to be in my vicinity, it seemed if the sleen should close with me. I
continued, wildly, to run. The sleen and the hunters, efficiently,
patiently, must have been trailing me for Ahn. Too, they must have
switched trails, picking up my fresher trail. For example, if they were
following my trail of two days ago, where I had come west on Venaticus
instead of Clive, they would not have been in this area. This was my first
time in this part of the city. Accordingly. they must have switched
trails, probably in the vicinity of the Plaza of Tarns. It is natural for
a sleen placed on a scent to follow its strongest traces. KAJIRA OF

"Come along," I said to my party.
I led them east on Venaticus, to the Avenue of the Central Cylinder. It
was then my intention to go south on that avenue until I came to Wagon
Street, taking it east to Turia. There is more than one "wagon Street" in
Ar, incidentally, but the one I had in mind, that which led to the Street
of Brands, was the one usually called Wagon Street. The "wagon streets"
are generally east-west streets. They are called that, I suppose, because
they are open to wagon traffic during the day, and wide enough for two
wagons to pass on them. On many streets in Ar wagon traffic is discouraged
during daylight hours because of their narrowness. There is little
difficulty, of course, with the avenues and boulevards. They are generally
wider. Many girls, incidentally, have been on Wagon Street, being brought
down it on their first trip to Ar, though perhaps they did not see much of
it, their ankles chained to the central bar in the blue-and-yellow slave
wagons, those delivering them, according, say to the disk numbers on their
collars, or the addresses marked on their left breasts, to the various
houses on the Street of Brands.
"Ah!" said Boabissia.
"The Avenue of the Central Cylinder," I said. "It is indeed beautiful. We
will go right here."
"I am thirsty," said Hurtha, going toward a fountain. We followed him.
There are many among this avenue. MERCENARIES OF GOR-, (21) Pages

We were at Teiban and Venaticus,
at the southwest corner of the Teiban Sul Market. It was morning, the
eight Ahn, on the second day of the week. Naturally there were many folks
about in such a place, at such a time. MAGICIANS OF GOR-, (25) Page
